The Women’s Resource Center of Manatee, Visible Men Academy (VMA) and Tropicana are pleased to announce a unique new collaboration to strengthen the local community. These three organizations are working together to bring economic opportunity and support to the parents of Visible Men Academy.
Visible Men Academy is an all boys free k-8 public charter school in Bradenton, FL., and this initiative is part of the Visible Men Academy Two Generation Parent Success Program. The Parent Success Program is delivered through community partnerships with organizations that provide a service, expertise and mission that directly supports our families and students. Visible Men Academy is also one of only two local organizations that has been invited to become members of the Aspen Ascend Network (www.ascend.aspeninstitute.org) of innovative Two Generation leaders committed to disrupting poverty and creating economic mobility for families.
When Shannon Rohrer-Phillips, VMA Co-Founder and Director of Student and Family Support, and Ashley Brown,Executive Director of the Women’s Resource Center of Manatee met to talk about how they might work together the idea of bringing opportunity and resources to the Moms (and Dad’s) of VMA seemed like a perfect fit.
The Saturday Parent Success program kicked off in October when Judy Sedgeman, EdD (Three principles Living – Sedgeman Consulting LLC) held a workshop on stress management and finding hope and joy. In November, we focused on career and employment opportunities by bringing mentors, job coaches and employment opportunities including Advance Personnel, to the campus. While the VMA students were in their Saturday mentoring classes, their parents learned about online applications, local job opportunities and best practices for job success. Many parents also benefited from learning about the extensive programs and opportunities provided by the Women’s Resource Center of Manatee.
Upcoming programs will include an Arts and Wellness Project in December for the holidays and a Latina Empowerment workshop in 2015.
Some of our success stories:
– A mother who is struggling with a sick family member was able to connect with a resource for support.
– A family who moved to Manatee County from Cuba and still struggling to learn the language connected with a job opportunity, teaching baseball players at Pirate City.
-12 VMA Spanish Speaking Parents followed the Advice of a Bilingual Tropicana recruiter and advocated for VMA to add Conversational English Classes to the Parent Success Program so they can strengthen their employability.
– People found jobs!
“VMA is pleased to be partnering with the Women’s Resource Center of Manatee County to help provide educational and economic opportunities for our parents through the VMA Two Generation Parent Success Program. Today’s Job Fair event was a win win-win for our students, families and community partners” said Rohrer-Phillips.
This collaboration between Visible Men Academy, Women’s Resource Center of Manatee and Tropicana Women’s Network shows how education, non -profits and business working together can impact positive change in our community.
