SARASOTA, FL – November, 18, 2014 – The Board of Trustees from Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation and Team from SMHF was very pleased with the turnout of yesterday’s luncheon that took place at the Bird Key Yacht Club. The Yacht Club’s sweeping bay views went largely unnoticed as the room seemed spellbound by the luncheon’s speaker, world renowned doc Mahfouz El Shahawy. Currently, Dr. El Shahawy is conducting research and clinical trials on drugs to investigate new treatments for Metabolic Syndrome, Diabetic Heart Disease, Heart Failure, Hypertension, Atrial fibrillation and Stoke Prevention. Shahawy said “by focusing on early detection measures we take this from intervention to prevention which should be our goal”. He encouraged those in the room to stay tuned into their health by adopting a more evidence based scoring system for early cardiovascular risk stratification and to continue to partner with Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation to grow programs that help to that end. Additionally he invited the audience to attend the 11th annual Cardiovascular Symposium that is free and open to the general public on February 7th, 2015 at Sarasota Memorial Hospital in the Auditorium. This symposium will focus on the latest and greatest on prevention from leading physicians from all over the U.S.
Since 2006, the Legacy Society has met annually to bring information to fellow members and the public concerning best health practices. The luncheon is a private event that is reserved for those who have made a commitment to the Healthcare Foundation through financial or estate planning. CEO Alex Quarles said “we are so fortunate to have such an amazing and generous group of individuals who understand what long term planning can mean to the overall care of those in Sarasota proper”. She also said “these inviduals are responsible for a significant portion of funding that bring continuing education, technology, and instructional programs that benefit our patients and community on a daily basis.”
