Organic heirloom seeds coming to Market Off Main
Organic Heirloom Seeds Coming in November to Market Off Main In New Port Richey
New Port Richey, FL (Nov. 13, 2014) – Through a cooperative arrangement with Friendship Farms & Fare and Ecology Florida, the Market Off Main in New Port Richey, FL will offer a wide range of organic, heirloom, non-GMO seeds exclusively from Seed Savers Exchange located in Decorah, Iowa. The seed display and sales area will be presented to the public at a special event on Saturday, November 29 at 1:00 p.m. The public is invited to attend, and there will be lectures and presentations by local officials and community leaders.
The organizers of the unveiling of this heirloom seed rack are tying the event in with Small Business Saturday, an American shopping holiday on the Saturday after Thanksgiving during one of the busiest shopping periods of the year. Small Business Saturday was first held on November 27, 2010. It is a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, which feature big box retail and e-commerce stores respectively. By contrast, Small Business Saturday encourages holiday shoppers to patronize brick and mortar businesses that are small and local.
Market Off Main in downtown New Port Richey will be the only location in the Tampa Bay region of Florida offering these high quality packaged seeds from Seed Savers Exchange. It will be the exclusive location west of the Orlando/Ocala area, north of Ft. Myers, and south of Tallahassee for gardeners to acquire Seed Savers Exchange’s high quality heirloom, organic seeds.
At present, there are no retail seed racks for Seed Savers anywhere in the region, including major metropolitan areas such as Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater. Seed Savers Exchange map of their seed rack locations: http://www.seedsavers.org/onlinestore/Seed-Rack-Locations_4/
Some of the seed packs with names like Early Jersey Cabbage, Dragon Carrots, Georgia Southern Collards, Genovese Basil, Lacinato Kale, and over 50 other heirloom, organic vegetable seeds will be available for sale, including some from local farms and gardens.
A spokesperson for Ecology Florida observed that this innovative project embodies the ideals of Ecology Florida, by bringing heirloom organic seeds into the community, enhancing local culture, and supporting the local economy. This is how a community and society can advance toward balance in ecologies of nature, culture, and economics.
