Bradenton, Florida, October 15, 2014 — Dr. Steven Tinsworth, local orthodontist, is this year’s recipient of the Oren Oliver Distinguished Service Award from the Southern Association of Orthodontists (SAO). This award was established in 1978 to recognize an individual member of the Southern Association Orthodontists who has given “above and beyond” the normal commitment to the SAO and has helped the Association to accomplish its mission. The recipients are individuals who have helped to guide the SAO through the years with dedication and selfless service for the good of the organization. This is the highest award that the SAO bestows upon its members.
It was unique that the orthodontist for whom the award is named was Dr. Tinsworth’s orthodontist and that it is National Orthodontic Health Month.
He attended the University of Kentucky College Of Dentistry. He served in the US Air Force Dental Corps as Captain. He completed his orthodontic training at LSU School of Dentistry in New Orleans. While serving as the first orthodontic graduate representative for over 50 dental schools to the American Student Dental Association, he met local Bradenton orthodontist Dr. Bill Thompson who enticed Steve to move to Bradenton, Florida where he started his practice.
Dr. Tinsworth has been involved with the Manatee Dental Society, Florida Association of Orthodontists, SAO as President, American Association of Orthodontists as an AAO Delegate, and Council on Orthodontic Practice as Chair among other leadership positions. In 2008 Dr. T collaborated and was Executive Producer of the infotainment movie “Crooked” which was then made available to the public and sold in the ADA Catalogue.
Beyond his professional activities, Steve is intensely involved in local activities, such as kid’s sports and Boy Scouts, American Red Cross, Manatee Chamber of Commerce, American Cancer Society, and the United Way. He is currently excited about Take Stock in Children which provides mentoring and scholarships for underprivileged children, the Bradenton Kiwanis Foundation which gives over $420,000 annually to local community needs, and the Manatee Players Performing Arts Center.
His most rewarding experiences are those times when patients had a dramatic change and appreciated the outcome, as did parents or spouses.
He modeled the behavior of his father in efforts to help others. Inspiration comes from observation of those who inspire him by actions more so than words. Dr. Tinsworth was a catalyst in fluoridation of Manatee County and City of Bradenton waters to optimum levels. This is second only to polio vaccine as a significant public health measure.
Dr. Tinsworth was made a Fellow of the American College of Dentists in 2005. He was acknowledged as Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year in 2008. He was the first recipient of the Chamber of Commerce/Bradenton Herald Individual of Merit Healthcare Award in 2013. He was in the Top Dentists of Sarasota and a finalist in Bradenton Herald Peoples’ Choice this year.
Orthodontists are dental specialists who put braces on the teeth of adults and children to build esteem by making their faces look better and improve their dental health by helping them bite correctly.
Founded in 1921, the Southern Association of Orthodontists is one of eight regional subgroups of the American Association of Orthodontists. The purposes of the non-profit organization are:
- To advance the art and science of orthodontics,
- To encourage and sponsor research,
- To strive for optimal standards of excellence in orthodontic education and practice, and
- To make significant contributions to the dental health of the public.
