City of Clearwater Mayor George Cretekos Proclaims November 21-23 As “Suncoast Jazz Classic Weekend”

Mayor Clearwater, FL – November 11, 2014 – Anticipating that some 3-4,000 jazz music fans will converge on Clearwater Beach at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort and Marriott Suites Hotel. City of Clearwater Mayor George Cretekos proclaimed the weekend of Nov. 21-23, 2014 as “Suncoast Jazz Classic Weekend.” The Suncoast Jazz Classic has called Clearwater home for the past 24 years and is so proud to receive this proclamation!

15 leading festival bands and headliners from throughout the country and Florida will present more than 130 hours of continuous traditional and dixieland jazz music, blues, swing, Big Band, and Zydeco/Cajun at the 24th Annual Suncoast Jazz Classic. Among the headliners from the Tampa Bay area are jazz guitarist Nate Najar, singer Paulette Pepper, clarinetist icon Bob Draga, jazz vocalist Theo Valentin, and young instrumentalist Sukris Vong. In addition to the musical presentation, five bands are scheduled to play for a Swing Dance Extravaganza at the Marriott on Friday from 6 pm. to midnight. A new youth invitational program is scheduled for Saturday morning at 8 am.

“WHEREAS the City of Clearwater is proud to join in celebrating the 24th Annual Suncoast Jazz Classic, which is a major partner in the city’s vibrant arts community and attracts increased attention to our great City of Clearwater;

WHEREAS the Suncoast Jazz Classic has enriched cultural life in Clearwater by organizing and promoting a Jazz Music Festival each year, showcasing leading musical groups and performers from throughout the North America and hosting internationally-acclaimed musicians to share their music with our citizens and jazz enthusiasts from Florida, other states and other countries, contributing to the education of young musicians and fostering the preservation of Jazz;

WHEREAS the art of creating jazz music is an uniquely American form of music, originated over 100 years ago and continuing to thrive throughout the years, and having influenced and enriched not only American music and culture but the music and culture of the world;

WHEREAS Suncoast Jazz Classic is an outstanding non-profit, all volunteer organization established and developed at Clearwater Beach in the State of Florida; 

NOW, therefore, I, George Cretekos, Mayor of Clearwater in recognition of their outstanding accomplishments and contribution to Clearwater, hereby proclaim Nov. 21-23, 2013 as SUNCOAST JAZZ CLASSIC WEEKEND.”
