Sarasota, FL October 5, 2014 –ROBRADY design’s Senior Business Development Manager, Robert Karnick, is appearing at this year’s Industrial Design Society of America (IDSA) Medical Design Conference to discuss the impact of observational research in developing products that fight infection.
Held at the state-of-the-art Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS), this year’s conference, The Usability Ecosystem, comprises several distinct learning situations ranging from traditional seminars and hands-on workshops to a unique interactive lab track. Karnick will present a case study on the studio’s award-winning HyGreen Hand Hygiene Recording and Reminding System to a sold-out audience.
“With concerns about infectious diseases so prominent right now, I think we have an opportunity to demonstrate how powerful and important design can be,” says Karnick. “It’s not an overstatement to say that medical design can literally save lives.”
Each year, Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) kills nearly 100,000 people, increases medical expenses for over 15 times that many and prolongs hospital stays. Perhaps most tragic about HAI is that it is largely preventable.
The HyGreen system is an innovative combination of devices working in concert to improve healthcare by monitoring and recording hand washing by hospital employees. A central database keeps hand washing data and also provides feedback on compliance to healthcare workers.
Karnick will discuss the broad spectrum of challenges that ROBRADY faced as they collaboratively developed the HyGreen system and how blending observational research with technology development creates an elegant solution that effectively confronts a leading cause of death in the United States.
An industrial design veteran with over 20 years of experience developing innovative solutions in the consumer products, industrial and medical device industry, Karnick is responsible for business development at ROBRADY design. He holds 6 patents in a range of sectors including medical devices.
The HyGreen Case Study presentation begins at 4:15, Friday, November 7 at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS).
