The District Board of Trustees (DBoT) of Pasco-Hernando State College launched a national search for the fourth president of the 42-year-old institution. Katherine M. Johnson, Ed.D., PHSC president for more than a decade and a higher education leader for more than 30 years, will retire on June 30, 2015.
After Johnson announced her retirement at the June 2014 board meeting, Trustee Ed Blommel agreed to chair the presidential screening committee and to serve as liaison between the committee and the board. At its September meeting, the board voted to secure the services of the Macon, Ga.-based national executive search firm of Myers McRae Executive Search and Consulting.
Blommel hosted the first presidential search screening committee meeting on October 28 at the College’s West Campus in New Port Richey, introducing representatives of Myers McRae to the group. At the dynamic, two hour initial meeting, Blommel commented on the exciting, but daunting task of selecting a new president. “We have an incredibly important job to do,” said Blommel. “We’ve hit home runs with our first three presidents, Dr. Milton O. Jones; the founding president, followed by President Dr. Robert Judson, and current President Dr. Kathy Johnson. “Now we want to hit a grand slam,” continued Blommel, “we need a president to build on the progress we’ve made and lead us into the next era.”
The Myers McRae representatives outlined a presidential search recruitment strategy and provided a timeline and details on the committee’s role and responsibilities related to the search. Appointed by the board at its September meeting, the committee is comprised of a cross section of about 30 community leaders, current and former College and Foundation Board members, student leaders, PHSC alumni and current college employees.
From an initial pool of qualified applicants, the board will interview a slate of candidates based on the recommendations of the screening committee. The goal is to select a new leader by spring that is prepared to begin his or her tenure by July 1, 2015.
