NORTH VENICE, Florida (October 28, 2014) – Building on Sarasota’s long-standing tradition of excellence in architecture, The Mall at University Town Center (UTC) was designed to be a beautiful, sustainable, and high-tech addition to the Sarasota landscape. The 4 fountains, which were constructed in their entirety by local water feature supplier, WESCO Fountains, Inc. do not deviate from this plan.
The striking curvilinear Exterior Entry Fountain welcomes visitors with the warmth and beauty of the same custom-cut German fossil stone that is used throughout The Mall and it alerts visitors that they are about to enter a contemporary structure with a highly refined metal and glass aesthetic, and soaring, light-filled spaces that seamlessly blend with natural building materials and native, eco-friendly plants.
There are many tech-savvy features woven into all areas of the UTC complex and the water features are no exception. In addition to having multiple sumps that prevent suction entrapment, a dual-stage electronic water level control, and Illumination provided by 50 LED light bulbs, the up to 4’ display height of the 102 aerator nozzles on the Exterior Entry Fountain automatically lowers as wind speeds rise.
As you enter the mall, you are greeted by a 30’ x 10’ stainless steel basin with three 3form lightboxes that emerge from the Miami Beach Pebble-filled basin. The 80’ perimeter of the Interior Entry Fountain, the smallest of the 4 water features, is a weir that spills over into a steel grate, creating an infinity edge.
As you walk past the Interior Entry Fountain, you encounter the U-shaped basin that surrounds the glass elevator in the Grand Court. Like the Interior Entry Fountain, this stainless steel basin is filled with Miami Beach Pebbles and the perimeter creates an infinity edge, but what makes this fountain the undeniable focal point of the Grand Court is the 6 jets that “dance” to a choreography of color-changing LED lights.
Make sure to leave The Mall through Saks Fifth Avenue so you can enjoy the calming effect of the Elevated Reflection Pool outside their door. The first of the 4 water features to be constructed at UTC, this 5’ x 50’ stainless steel basin was welded onsite to create one solid piece and, like the two interior fountains, the 110’ perimeter has an infinity edge and the basin holds 1.5 tons of Miami Beach Pebbles.
The beauty of these fountains goes far beyond what most UTC visitors will see. The elegant design of the exterior water features is made possible by 2 underground equipment vaults with paver set hatches that house the feature and filter pumps, filtration systems, dual-stage electronic water level controls, and custom-built control panels. The interior fountains are controlled from a state-of-the-art equipment room that houses equipment similar to that of the underground vaults and a chemical room where acid and chlorine levels are continually monitored and automatically adjusted.
