About Anne of Anne of Avonlea, the Musical
Anne of Avonlea, The Musical is an original musical production based on Anne of Green Gables, the bestselling 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery. Written as fiction for readers of all ages, the literary classic has been considered a children’s novel since the mid-twentieth century. It recounts the adventures of Anne Shirley, a young orphan girl, age 11 who is mistakenly sent to Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a middle-aged brother and sister who have a farm on Prince Edward Island and who had intended to adopt a boy to help them. The novel recounts how Anne makes her way with the Cuthberts, in school and within the town.
Since publication, Anne of Green Gables has sold more than 50 million copies and has been translated into 20 languages. Numerous sequels were written by Montgomery, and since her death another sequel has been published, as well as an authorized prequel. The original book is taught to students around the world.
Anne of Avonlea, The Musical is performed in two acts. Act I depicts Anne’s younger life from age 11 through 13. Act II tracks her life during her teen years. The musical features virtually TWO casts – depicting Anne and her friend as children and then again as teens and young adults.
