Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School Students Receive Bi-Weekly Financial Literacy Classes from Fifth Third Bank
TAMPA, Fla., (Oct. 9, 2014) – Fifth Third Bank (North Florida) and Derrick Brooks Charities recently hosted an event to kick off the third year of the “Brooks Bunch Business Bootcamp,” a one-year financial literacy program for 10th and 11th grade students at Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate High School (BDCHS) in Hillsborough County.
During the event, students and their parents heard from Derrick Brooks, a former American college and professional football player who was a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 seasons and recently inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame. Additionally, Brian Lamb, president and CEO of Fifth Third Bank (North Florida), spoke about the importance of financial literacy and sharing what they learn with others.
“This program gives students the financial empowerment tools they need early in their lives and into adulthood – they learn how to effectively manage their money and make sound decisions that will help them long into the future,” said Lamb. “Derrick and I are most proud of the fact that this program has been able to increase financial literacy more than 30% among participating students over the past two years. We are excited to continue the impact this year with a new class.”
Since 2012, more than 50 students from BDCHS have participated in the program and 25 more are expected to go through the classes this year.
“Brooks DeBartolo prepares its students for post-secondary success in a small learning environment, focusing on each student and their educational accomplishments,” said Brooks. “This program will provide another way for our students to succeed while preparing for college and other important life goals.”
“We learned lessons about financial responsibility that will be valuable in the real world, and how to be smarter about our finances,” said Matt Lozada, 12th grade student at BDCHS and a top performing former Bootcamp participant. “Many of the principles we learned about will be useful in our college and adult lives.”
The curriculum, designed by Dave Ramsey – personal finance expert and New York Times best-selling author – is called “Foundation in Personal Finance.” Students learn about savings, investment options, debt, budgeting, mortgages, insurance and other financial topics. Bi-weekly classes are taught by Fifth Third employees.
