By winning a local “shark tank” business plan competition, The Health Council used the capital to develop Wellness Warriors; an app unique to the area health and fitness community. The competition, sponsored by the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County was conducted spring of 2014. The Wellness Warriors app was proposed and the Health Council awarded a cash prize from the competition.
The Wellness Warriors app allows users to track food intake and physical activity while promoting friendly competition, social interaction as well as locates connections to local wellness experts. It has a rewards-based system where users’ healthy behaviors earn cash contributions to local health and wellness charities they choose via the app.
“We’re excited about developing Wellness Warriors to challenge Tampa Bay area residents to improve population health at the local level – one person at a time,” said Elizabeth Rugg, Executive Director of The Health Councils. “We want to create an epidemic of healthy habits in our area.”
Rugg added, “It was important that we create a cutting edge app specific to our community that could have expansion capabilities into other counties through the Florida Association of Health Planning Agencies. Wellness Warriors is scalable to any location.”
The Wellness Warriors app currently is available in Pinellas, Hillsborough, Pasco and Polk counties. Free downloads are accessible on iTunes and Google Play for Android.
