Mayor Rick Kriseman Proclaims November 2-9 BLUE Ocean Week in St. Pete
St. Petersburg, FL (October 18, 2014) – The St. Petersburg City Council has unanimously voted on a Resolution for the BLUE Ocean Film Festival & Conservation Summit to be held here in 2014, 2016 and 2018, with the inaugural event from November 3 through November 9.
The agreement grants BLUE the exclusive rights to host the event through 2019 and in recognition of the significance of its relocation to St. Petersburg provides $25,000 for each one of the events to be held here in 2014, 2016 and 2018. BLUE will be held in Monaco in 2015 and 2017, as it alternates between the host cities.
In addition, noting its impact on “local, national and global economic and conservation initiatives,” the City of St. Petersburg and Mayor Rick Kriseman proclaimed the week of November 2 though November 9 as “Blue Ocean Week.”
The world’s premiere ocean-focused event, BLUE will feature industry all-stars from filmmaking, exploration, journalism, art, conservation and marine science at venues throughout the downtown area.
Open to the public, the festival uses the power of entertainment, film, photography and education to inspire ocean stewardship. Throughout the week, visitors and locals will be able to enjoy multiple interactive activities and ocean-themed events throughout downtown St. Pete. BLUE finds a perfect home in St. Pete/Clearwater, as it promotes protecting the ocean and beaches that make the area a world-class travel destination.
BLUE will also bring oceans of fun to downtown St. Pete for visitors, locals, families and kids of all ages. Attendees will be able to take part in special kids film screenings, conservation and education exhibits and activities. Highlights include a spectacular, 60-ton sand sculpture outside of The Mahaffey Theatre, thanks to Glass is Life, a life size, 90 ft. inflatable Blue Whale named “Mz. Blue” and special presentations by the Class Acts Youth Program of The Mahaffey Theatre and .
The seven-day BLUE experience will take place at multiple venues throughout Downtown St. Pete, including the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront, The Mahaffey Theatre, USF St. Petersburg, Muvico Sundial 20, Straub Park, The Museum of Fine Art and The Dali Museum. Highlights of the festival include networking with renowned filmmakers, the screening of 150+ films, Q&As with famous ocean celebrities, art exhibits, the prestigious BLUE Carpet Awards, numerous family activities and “Ocean Voyagers”, a special collaborative screening and live score presentation by The Florida Orchestra; and much more.
