TAMPA, Fla. — The Straz Center for the Performing Arts presents Guatemalan singer-songwriter and guitarist Gaby Moreno on Friday, Nov. 7, at 8 p.m., in the Jaeb Theater.
Whether she’s belting traditional Guatemalan ballads or ripping up funky blues inspired riffs, Moreno is on the rise. The singer-songwriter blends blues, Latin and soul-folk music into elegant harmonies and unexpected timbres. Her career has taken her to historic theaters in Europe, North America, Argentina, Brazil and Australia, and festivals including Denmark’s Roskilde, the Netherlands’ Haarlem Jazz Festival and France’s Jazz à Vienne. She’s appeared on The Tonight Show, shared a stage with Bono, Angelique Kidjo, Bob Geldolf and Damien Rice and has been a touring member of Hugh Laurie & The Copper Bottom Band.
Moreno began studying voice at seven with Marina Prado Bolaños. At age 17, she signed with Warner Bros., and in 2001 was signed to Sony Music by pop mogul Tommy Mottola. Her first album, Still the Unknown, earned her a supporting act gig for both Tracy Chapman’s and Ani DiFranco’s U.S. tours. Her sophomore album, Illustrated Songs, reached No. 1 on Latin iTunes and Amazon Latin. In 2012, Moreno’s duet with Ricardo Arjona, “Fuiste Tu,” earned Latin Grammy® nominations for Song of The Year and Record of The Year. Moreno’s third album, Postales, was released on Arjona’s label, Metamorfosis.
Among other accomplishments, Moreno’s “Escondidos” won Song of the Year in the Latin category of the 2006 John Lennon Songwriting Contest. Her rendition of “Smile” was featured in the Oscar®-winning documentary film The Cove and she co-authored the theme for NBC’s Parks and Recreation, which was nominated for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music at the Primetime Emmy® Awards.
