Cultural exchange itineraries designed to be educational and interactive
Tampa, Fla. (October 15, 2014) – Tampa-based Habana Art, LLC. has secured special licensing from the the United States Department of Treasury, Office of Foreign Assets Control that enable the company to arrange travel for Americans to Cuba as part of a cultural exchange. The program and trip itineraries are designed to educate and inform travelers on Cuban culture, music, art and architecture, while allowing for genuine interaction between Americans and Cubans.
For years, travel to Cuba had been primarily limited to Cuban-Americans traveling to visit relatives. However, guidelines were expanded to include people-to-people programs aimed at education and cultural enhancement. The experiences offered by Habana Art have each been personally selected, and are part of a true passion-project, for Tampa residents and Habana Art owners, Michael Mauricio and Manuel Fernandez.
“Nearly 130 years ago, Cubans flocked to Tampa with the promise of employment at one of the cigar factories, and a home in Ybor City,” said Mauricio. “The cultural ties to our community and the strong presence we feel here can be directly tied to the streets of Havana.”
“We want to provide our guests with an engaging and life-changing experience,” added Fernandez. “This is an opportunity to experience the vibrant culture of Cuba in the same manner that a local would.”
Travelers will visit locations such as an eighteenth century fortress known as the Fortaleza de San Carlos de la Cabaña, the Escuela Nacional de Arte (National Art School of Habana), and Cojimar, the fishing village that inspired Ernest Hemingway’s “The Old Man and the Sea.” Along the way, they will take part in several opportunities to interact with Cuban artists, musicians and more.
The company will begin offering five-day trips starting November 11 and will fly directly out of Tampa. Packages are all-inclusive and cover a chartered flight to Havana, deluxe hotel accommodations, transfers, a personal guide and opportunities for direct interaction with Cuban citizens.
