Tampa, FL – (September 15, 2014) – Tampa Bay WaVE, a local non-profit organization that helps entrepreneurs turn ideas into growing technology ventures, is celebrating its rebranding and the launch of its newly redesigned website, thanks to the efforts of a team of local students and advertising agency 22squared.
In March, 22squared hosted Mobilize Tampa Bay – Creating Community, an advertising-themed hackathon to benefit non-profit organizations in the Tampa community. Held in the agency’s downtown office, the weekend-long competition brought together 20 advertising students from the University of South Florida, the University of Central Florida, the University of Tampa and the Savannah College of Art & Design to create an updated brand solution for WaVE to better convey information to potential co-workers and accelerators, to showcase the opportunities and events held at their facility, and to update the site to reflect current trends in technology and web design.
Mobilize Tampa Bay participants were grouped into four student teams, and they spent the weekend creating new branding, website and collateral ideas for Tampa Bay WaVE. At the end of the 72-hour hackathon, judges from the Tampa Bay Rays, Absolute Mobile Solutions, WaVE and 22squared selected the five-person group R.U.B.I.C. as the winning team. Beginning in April, the winning team, WaVE and 22squared collaborated to create a new logo, incorporate new branding and launch the new site.
“Now that our accelerators have exceeded $8 million in funding, we are proud that we have a website that reflects the successes we are seeing with our companies and the FirstWaVE Accelerator Program,” said Linda Olson, President, Tampa Bay WaVE. “We’re grateful for the partnership of 22squared, these students and the local community because together we’re providing Tampa with a space for its emerging tech entrepreneurs to be proud of and call home.”
Tampa Bay WaVE and the FirstWaVE accelerator program launched in March 2013 as the result of a U.S. Department of Commerce i6 Challenge grant awarded in the fall of 2012 to a collaborative regional partnership led by the University of South Florida and Tampa Bay WaVE. The FirstWaVE Accelerator and FirstWaVE Venture Center have supported 72 local tech companies in their first 16 months, and they currently provide flexible office and co-working space in downtown Tampa to 27 of these start-ups. Accelerators in the FirstWaVE program have raised more than $8 million in outside capital and provided nearly 200 jobs to the Bay Area.
“Tampa is quickly becoming a southeast hub for innovation, and we applaud Tampa Bay WaVE’s commitment to empowering local tech entrepreneurs,” added Shane Needham, VP, Director of Production, 22squared. “Our hope is that 22squared’s Mobilize hackathon can serve as a catalyst for continued collaboration between emerging young talent, government officials and successful tech start-ups, empowering the tech community to drive economic growth for the city.”
22squared hosted a launch party in their downtown office for Tampa Bay WaVE’s new website on Friday, September 12. Attendees included judges, sponsors and the winning team from the Mobilize Tampa Bay hackathon and WaVE board members. Photos from the launch party are posted on WaVE’s Facebook page, and 22squared will begin planning for Mobilize 2015 in the coming weeks.
