Sarasota, Florida – September 12, 2014 – Center For Sight, the premier vision, cosmetic and skin care practice in Southwest Florida, is proud to be the exclusive Presenting Sponsor for the 2014 Lighthouse of Manasota Charity Golf Classic. The annual fundraising event will take place on Saturday, October 18, 2014, at Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club. “We have long supported the mission of Lighthouse of Manasota on behalf of those in our community suffering vision impairments,” said Dr. David W. Shoemaker, Founder, CEO and Director of Cataract and Lens Replacement Surgery at Center For Sight. “The annual Charity Golf Classic is a great way to raise awareness for Lighthouse of Manasota, while securing the much-needed funds to broaden their reach.”
The annual Charity Golf Classic continues the tradition of great golf and camaraderie that began 20 years ago with the Dr. James Morrish, Sr. Memorial Golf Tournament, which honored Dr. Morrish as a role model for people with vision loss. Proceeds from this year’s tournament will support the range of services delivered by Lighthouse of Manasota, with a significant portion used to fund the Early Intervention/Blind Babies and the Transition programs.
The Early Intervention/Blind Babies Program offers services in the home or pre-school by certified Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI) for infants and toddlers (from birth through age 5) with vision loss. The collaborative parent-teacher training promotes the child’s skill development, self-sufficiency and social development, and facilitates the child’s eventual transition to pre-school and kindergarten. The Transition Program prepares eligible students (ages 14 to 22) for their transition from high school to college, trade school or the workplace. Students learn important life skills and practical job readiness skills, such as how to complete written applications, interview for a job and create a resume. Participating students also have the opportunity to attend summer camp, which gives them the chance to take part in a paid work experience.
Founded in 1985, Lighthouse of Manasota is the only nationally accredited, private, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides professionally taught training and rehabilitation classes at no cost to blind and visually impaired people of all ages in our region. Lighthouse of Manasota programs offer a holistic approach to foster independence, productivity and improved quality of life within an environment that is enriching for individuals with vision loss.
