Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) was honored with a Special Contribution Award September 2, 2014, at Pasco Economic Development Council’s 28th Annual Industry of the Year Awards Banquet. At its banquet held annually at Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel, Pasco EDC recognizes local companies that exhibit exemplary growth in technology, innovation, job creation, capital investment and community service.
“Receiving this prestigious award is very meaningful to all of us at PHSC,” said Katherine M. Johnson, Ed.D, PHSC president. “The past year has been among the most exciting and challenging years in the history of our college,” she said. “Our District Board of Trustees, our administrators, faculty, and staff have worked in overdrive to establish the new Porter Campus in January, to transition to a state college in February, and to roll out new bachelor’s and workforce programs that began this fall. Receiving this special recognition from the PEDC is a much appreciated honor.”
PHSC celebrated a record year in 2014 with the completion of construction of the Porter Campus at Wiregrass Ranch totaling $59.3 million in capital investment, and the announcement of offering two new 4-year degrees including a Bachelor of Applied Science in supervision and management and a Bachelor of Science in nursing. The addition of PHSC’s fifth full-service campus has allowed the college to better serve the southeast area of Pasco County and has provided an overall economic impact of $240 million annually to the local economy.
“Pasco-Hernando State College has had a major impact on Pasco County,” said Skip Miller, senior vice president of SunTrust Bank and chair of the Pasco EDC Banquet Award Committee. “PHSC’s addition of four year degrees and a state-of-the-art healthcare training facility, further positions Pasco County as a premier destination for medical related companies looking for a quality workforce.”
Technology plays a key role in everything that PHSC does. The new campus has state-of-the-art science and nursing labs to prepare nurses for real-life situations in a hospital setting and computer labs with flexible working space adds to the college’s unique urban feel.
As a Florida Trade Grant recipient, PHSC now offers a certification program for manufacturing skills and works with CareerSource to provide grants to local manufacturers for training. For more information on Pasco-Hernando State College visit www.phsc.edu.
