On Tuesday, September 9th, an Honor Flight with 80 World War II Veterans will depart St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport on an Allegiant charter for a day long visit to Washington D.C. and the war memorials. This is the 15th Honor Flight hosted at PIE.
St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport’s roots began as a WWII Army Training Base, and after the war the property was given to the County in 1946 to develop as an airport. Airport Director Noah Lagos states, “The airport has been hosting Honor Flights since 2011 and we are proud of the strong community support that has been shown to our veterans and our place in our country’s military history. We are honored to host these events and hope to see the many organizations and individuals continue to come out to celebrate the veterans welcome home to St. Pete-Clearwater.”
Honor Flight of West Central Florida® President Beverly Frey states, “Honor Flight is so grateful to all our veterans and we honor their service to our country through each of our Honor Flight missions. Our efforts would not be possible without the wonderful support of St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) and Allegiant Air who help to make each flight a success. Please join us Tuesday evening as we welcome home our veterans and their volunteer guardians. Put on your red, white and blue, join in the fun and help make their homecoming a rousing success!”
The Veterans return to St. Pete-Clearwater at approximately 8:30 pm. The Welcome Home celebration is open to the public and various groups, military, and government leaders will be at the airport to greet the veterans. First Class Concessions will sell drinks, snacks, and sandwiches in Bag Claim Info Booth beginning at 7pm for the Honor Flights at PIE. Free parking will be available to attend the welcome home event sponsored by Honor Flight of West Central Florida along with courtesy parking provided by the airport for the Honor Flight Veterans.
Media trucks with identification may park curbside adjacent to Baggage Claim for the Veterans arrival.
