Dr. Barakat comes to Florida Cancer Affiliates from his private practice at the Tulsa Cancer Institute in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Dr. Barakat received his MD degree from the University of Damascus College of Medicine after obtaining his Bachelor of Science degree in biology in 1998. He received his internal medicine training at the University of Texas at Houston, Texas where he trained and cared for patients in Memorial Hermann Hospital, MD Anderson, and St Luke’s hospital system at Texas Medical Center. Dr. Barakat completed his training in medical oncology and his fellowship at Baylor University Medical Center/Sammons Cancer Center. During his fellowship, he served as Chief of Fellows and participated in many institutional research studies. He was the principal investigator on an advanced research project developed to improve communication and quality of care for cancer patients.
Dr. Barakat is board certified in Medical Oncology and Internal Medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a member of the American Hematology Society and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He is currently involved in treating different hematological and oncological diseases.
Dr. Barakat is the author of several publications on cancer treatment and enjoys being active in his community. While studying in Syria he volunteered for four years with the Syrian Red Cross.
He enjoys sports, especially basketball. While attending college he was a four year member of Syria’s national basketball team and a member of the University of Damascus Faculty of Medicine basketball team. Dr. Barakat enjoys piano, basketball, reading, swimming and table tennis.
