10 YEAR ANNIVERSARY
Sept. 12- Oct. 2at Studio@620
The multimedia work of student journalists from Melrose Elementary, John Hopkins Middle and Lakewood High schools offers insight into their worlds.
For 10 years, student journalists have been documenting the people, places and stories in their neighborhoods through the Journeys in Journalism program at Melrose Elementary, John Hopkins Middle and Lakewood High schools.
Their work culminates in the exhibit Through Our Eyes: Midtown and Beyond at Studio@620, 620 First Ave. S, St. Petersburg. The work portrays significant elements in the students’ communities through photography, writing and multimedia. This year’s exhibit begins Sept. 12 and runs through Oct. 2.
As it has for 10 years, Studio@620 has donated its gallery space for this month-long exhibit that is open to the public.
On opening night, Sept. 12, from 5-8 p.m., students will lead tours of the exhibit. Entertainment includes the John Hopkins Jazz Band and World Drummers.
To celebrate a decade of remarkable journalism by students in kindergarten through 12th grade, there will be a 10 year birthday cake.
As a special 10th anniversary memento, “Art in a Bag” will be available for $10. Patrons may choose a surprise bag of three 4×6 prints from the exhibit, or mix and match three prints including select images from the past 10 years for $15.
Exhibit hours are Tuesday- Saturday, 12-4pm.
Journeys in Journalism is a partnership between Pinellas County Schools and the Tampa Bay Times. The program is designed to immerse students K-12 in journalism/multimedia training. This year, the program at Lakewood High achieved the status of Pinellas County Career Academy, the Center for Journalism and Multimedia. All three schools have won prestigious national journalism awards.
Through Our Eyes is sponsored by Studio@620 and a generous grant from Duke Energy and donations from Reedy Photo Process, Davidson Fine Arts Gallery, Diane Bailey Morton Esq., Dowling & Weldon, St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership, and The Looper Group, Inc.
