LAKE WALES, FL (Aug. 5, 2014) – The Dick Pope/Polk County Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association (FPRA) announced that the fourth annual Carillon Classic 5K Run & Walk for the benefit of the George W. Harris, Jr. Runaway & Youth Crisis Shelter will be on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales.
“We are announcing the May 2, 2015 date for the next Carillon Classic at this time to give runners and walkers the opportunity to mark it on their calendars as early as possible,” said Marybeth Soderstrom, chair of the 2015 Carillon Classic 5K Run & Walk. “We also want to make potential corporate sponsors aware of the date so they can include it in their 2015 budgets.”
Soderstrom said the course layout will be changed due to a multi-million capital improvement project at Bok Tower Gardens and in response to suggestions from runners who participated in the 2014 Carillon Classic 5K Run & Walk.
The first three installments of the Carillon Classic 5K Run & Walk drew combined total of nearly 1,100 runners/walkers and generated $11,200 for the Bartow-based George W. Harris, Jr. Runaway & Youth Crisis Shelter, an initiative of Youth and Family Alternatives, Inc. The 2014 event set new records, attracting 455 registered runners from Florida and six other states and raising $4,300 for the shelter. The event also funds FPRA professional development scholarships.

“Our goal for 2015 is to sustain this momentum by bringing 500 runners to Bok Tower Gardens and raising even more revenue than in the past for the shelter, as well as our FPRA professional development scholarships,” Soderstrom said, adding that details on the 2015 event will be available soon on the internet.

The Carillon Classic 5K Run & Walk features what many consider Florida’s most challenging 5K course, since it requires runners and walkers to cope with elevation changes as well as a variety of terrains, including paved roads and gravel and mulch trails. As they compete high atop “Iron Mountain,” one of the highest points on the Florida peninsula, runners are also exposed to soothing music from the famed Bok Tower carillon as well as beautiful gardens, citrus groves and mountain vistas.
