Press conference scheduled for Aug. 5 to announce speaker
MANATEE COUNTY, FL (July 31, 2014) – Manatee Library Foundation, Inc. and the Manatee County Public Library System will host a Tues., Aug. 5 press conference at Central Library to make a announcement of an internationally acclaimed writer who will be guest speaker for the Foundation’s major fundraiser in 2015.
This fundraiser is a breakout from the tradition of the annual Author Luncheon. Instead the well-known author will speak at 7 p.m. on Jan. 29 at the Manatee Performing Arts Center, 502 3rd Ave. W., Bradenton.
The press conference will be held at Central Library, 1301 Barcarrota Ave., Bradenton and will begin shortly after the library opens at 10 a.m. Speakers will include the Foundation’s President Jane Plitt, Florida Rep. Jim Boyd, County Commissioner Larry Bustle and Manatee County Library Services Manager Ava Ehde.
“People are going to be wowed when they learn who our featured speaker is,” says Plitt. “We needed a major draw to raise the funds to upgrade our operating system which will delight our community patrons and to help raise awareness about the jewel that our Public Library system represents.”
The speaker’s prominence and popularity offers unique opportunities to both heighten awareness of our Public Library System and to raise funds for an exciting technical upgrade that library patrons will really like.”
As part of the fundraiser, the Foundation and Library System hope to raise $100,000 to overhaul the Library’s outdated online operating system which controls the behind-the-scenes staff functions and affects what library patrons can see and do when they use the catalog. Sponsorship details, a writing contest to promote the event and other details will be revealed on Aug. 5.
“This operating system will modernize the way the library’s staff and patrons use our resources,” Ehde says. “There will be easier social media interaction, the availability of products that will improve readers’ advisory services and display book jackets, simpler streaming audio and video capabilities, and a much improved, user-friendly experience for patrons accessing the catalog.”
Manatee Library Foundation provides supplemental funding to libraries throughout the Manatee County Library System. Contributions from the Library Foundation have enabled the County’s libraries to purchase additional resource materials, engage in special projects and extend the Library System’s outreach into the community.
