Manatee also received the award in 2011
MANATEE COUNTY, FL (July 29, 2014) – For the second time in four years, the Tampa Bay Business Journal has named Manatee County Government the healthiest employer in the region. Employee Health Benefits Manager Kim Stroud delivered the news to County Commissioners during a regular meeting today.
The Manatee YourChoice health plan was named tops in the region from among 200 employers from seven counties during the Journal’s 2014 Healthiest Employer awards this spring. The awards recognize Bay area businesses making a difference in their employees’ health. Manatee County also took home top honors in 2011.
Stroud gave credit to the Manatee County Commission for allowing such a creative program to succeed, and to plan members who have embraced the health plan, becoming a healthier workplace.
“We’re capitalizing on the success we’ve seen. The program dangles ‘carrots’ to entice people participate, and now we’re moving toward more toward outcome-based incentives,” Stroud says. “Also, we’re attending more to the data we get … particularly in terms of absenteeism, so that we can focus more on our unhealthier population trends and reduce sick time.”
About 2,000 Manatee County health plan participants have lost nearly 17,000 pounds, or nearly 8.5 tons of weight in two years since the start of YWeight, a program that incentivizes exercise and longterm weight loss. That has led to a decrease in preventative type II diabetes and reductions in cholesterol and blood pressure for Manatee County health plan members.
The Journal works with HealthiestEmployers.com, an Indianapolis-based research firm focused on corporate wellness. The firm used proprietary technology, wellness experts, physicians, professors, employers and human resource professionals to select the winners.
Finalists were ranked in six categories including Culture & Leadership Commitment; Foundational Components; Strategic Planning; Communications and Marketing; Programming and Interventions; Reporting and Analysis. To be considered for the award, Manatee County submitted a detailed questionnaire about its wellness and health management program.
According to HealthiestEmployers.com, Manatee County received a score of 93.8.
Manatee County’s health plan not only benefits employees by promoting physical activity, healthy nutrition, tobacco cessation and stress management; it also contributes to employee productivity and decreases absenteeism.
In 2011 Manatee Board of County Commission formally endorsed Manatee County’s “Culture of Health,” a resolution that touts a number of healthy measures Manatee County Government has taken to improve the wellness of its employees.
