Bradenton, FL – What are your goals? Where do you see yourself in five years? An upcoming session of Bridges to Careers, a program of CareerEdge, hopes to help 15 Bradenton residents answer that question and take steps confidently in that direction.
The free career-readiness program is set to start August 25 and will offer soft skills, resume writing, practice interviews, typing and a chance to take the Florida Ready-To-Work test as well as workplace and computer skills classes from State College of Florida.
“Many times all that is needed is polishing up what they already know,” explains Mireya Eavey, creator of the Bridges to Careers program and Executive Director of CareerEdge. She explained that Bridges is designed to help people who want to take the step to change their career pathway, those who are newly or long-term-unemployed and those looking to re-enter the workforce. Eavey went on to say: “It is our hope that participants come ready for their ‘next big step,’ meaning they want to take their skills and work to the next level.”
Anyone interested is encouraged to learn more Tuesday, August 5 from 4:00-5:30pm at an Open House at the SCC Office (302 Manatee Ave E, #303; Bradenton, FL 34208). The Open House will feature special guest Wayne “GigaloWeezy” Washington. A locally-known stand-up comedian and community activist, his monthly StraightTalk sessions bring typically over 50 people each month to talk in sincere yet artistic ways about issues that matter to them – poverty, violence, education, parenting, equality and whatever is on the community’s mind.
Bridges Program Coordinator Jessica Ruter of Suncoast Community Capital (an organization that manages Bridges to Careers) summed up her criteria for the incoming class in three words: “ready to succeed.” “Many students come from a difficult situation but are ready to be defined by their future, not their past” she went on to say and then added: “Whether you think it’s for you or a friend, we encourage anyone to come to the Open House on the 5th and learn more.”
Suncoast Community Capital, host of the Open House, is an agency that manages one of the Bridges to Careers program, which was created by and continues to be funded by CareerEdge.
