(Bradenton, FL) Snooty is an extra special manatee who sets records every day for how long we know manatees can live. So to celebrate his record-breaking 66 years, South Florida Museum is throwing him an extra special Birthday Bash on Saturday, July 19, 2014 from 10 am until 2 pm presented by Mosaic. The celebration will be full of fun activities for the young and young at heart! Family-friendly games and activities, entertainment, wildlife awareness opportunities and food vendors will be available throughout the event. Free treats, cookies and drinks will be available for children (while supplies last). Admission to the outdoor Birthday Bash in the Spanish Plaza, the Museum’s North parking lot (by the Manatee River) and on 10th Street will be FREE, while General Admission to the Museum’s inside galleries, Aquarium, and Planetarium will be reduced to $9 for adults, $8 for seniors (65 and up), and $7 for children ages 4-12 (children under 4 and Museum Members are always free).
Event Participants, Festivities and Details
At this year’s Birthday Bash, visitors can participate in fun games and activities, learn about environmental preservation, interact with wildlife and arts organizations from all over the area, and of course wish Snooty a “Happy Birthday!” You may enjoy entertainment and performances from “The Garbage Men” band and the “Cortez Main Hatch Motleys” sea shanty singers. There will be a misting station and inflatable slide, all the fun games you’ve come to love, as well as a temporary tattoo station and balloon twisting, and everything thing else the young and young-at-heart could hope for!
Mote Marine Laboratory will be on hand with the Mote Mobile Exhibit, as will Mosaic with the Mosaic Express educational experience and a fun Fossil Dig pit. Also planning to offer opportunities for fun and learning are Busch Gardens, the Pittsburgh Pirates and Bradenton Marauders, Bishop Animal Shelter, Sea to Shore Alliance, Sarasota Bay Estuary Program, Manatee County Natural Resources Department, Florida Maritime Museum – and many more! Suncoast Food Trucks will offer several yummy food options, as will the A-OK Hot Dog Wagon, along with free cupcakes and treats from Flowers Bakery, free cookies, and free apple juice from Tropicana while supplies last. Free samples will also be offered by Blue Bell ice cream.
The events will culminate with the noon presentation of Snooty’s birthday cake (of fruit and veggies), along with the crowd singing Snooty “Happy Birthday” in the Aquarium and in the Spanish Plaza Courtyard. The Birthday Song will be led by Jackie Barron representing presenting sponsor Mosaic. That will be followed by the presentation of the Annual Birthday Card Contest award winners. Judging occurred last Monday, July 7 and was conducted by Sarah Hammock, Summer Science Camp Director at the South Florida Museum, Carrie Yearwood and Leah Witt, Museum supporters, and Toni Whitt, Education Editor for the Bradenton Herald (pictured left, from left to right). First, second, and third place awards will be given in multiple age categories.
