Carnival VP of beverage operations, Eddie Allen, and Cigar City Brewing Company national sales manager, Joe Burns, engage in the ceremonial ‘first pour’ of product over ice sculpture.
TAMPA, Fla.— Port Tampa Bay applauds the announcement of an exclusive agreement between Carnival Cruise Line and Tampa-based Cigar City Brewery — the first partnership of this magnitude between a microbrewery and a major cruise line — to serve Cigar City craft beers on all of the line’s Florida-based ships. Port Tampa Bay was pleased to take part in the announcement ceremonies aboard the recently renovated Carnival Legend this past Sunday.
Carnival will now carry Cigar City’s Florida Cracker Belgian-Style Ale and Invasion Pale Ale on 13 Carnival ships sailing from five Florida ports. The line expects to serve nearly 100,000 Cigar City beers in the first year of the agreement, according to a cruise line statement.
Representatives from Cigar City Brewing and Carnival were on hand to pour the ceremonial first beer in Carnival Legend’s recently-installed RedFrog Pub. Carnival has 13 Florida-based ships, including two from Port Tampa Bay, sailing three- to eight-day itineraries, carrying upwards of two million guests annually. Port Tampa Bay has been a strong partner with Carnival Cruise Lines for more than 20 years, and, more recently, the port and Cigar City Brewery shared booth space at the Cruise Shipping Miami Convention, earlier this year. As part of Port Tampa Bay’s efforts to promote the Tampa Bay region to the cruise industry, the port invited Cigar City to join them at Cruise Shipping Miami, the world’s largest cruise industry trade show, where the port was able to facilitate the very first meeting between Carnival and Cigar City.
“We are delighted to see two of Port Tampa Bay’s partners come together in such a big way, and we look forward to continuing to work with both of them for many years to come,” Paul Anderson, port president and CEO, said. “This is a feather in Tampa’s cap, and people from all over the world will literally be able to sample the culture of our unique city. We at the port are very proud to have initially brought these two organizations together and also be a part of this success.”
Cigar City Brewery was founded by Joey Redner, who started the company to highlight Tampa’s Cuban-American culture, and sold his first batch of commercially produced beer in 2009. Since then, Cigar City Brewery has expanded to offer a line of four main beers, three seasonal brews, a “Nitro” collection of higher-alcohol-content beverages and special-edition beers.
