The Pasco-Hernando State College (PHSC) Foundation recently received $11,000 from the James Santella Foundation to establish the James Santella Memorial Scholarship.
The James Santella Memorial Scholarship endowment will support Hernando County residents, or graduates from a Hernando County high school, who exhibit a passion and interest in a rewarding career in fire rescue or first responder service. The endowment will begin awarding scholarships in the 2014 fall semester.
James Santella, a 2004 Pasco-Hernando State College graduate, was a firefighter for Spring Hill Fire Rescue, Engine 2, who put family and service to his community above all else. His passing from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, inspired the creation of the James Santella Foundation. The organization provides resources and financial support to area residents suffering from ALS and educational opportunities to the students of PHSC.
