BRADENTON, FL (June 27, 2014) – The Hiker with a Heart is halfway to his goal: Bradenton’s Steve Adams has nearly reached the midpoint of the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail and donations for his favorite charity, the Family Partnership, have already reached $4,000.
Adams has challenged friends, family, online followers and Family Partnership Center supporters to pledge one penny ($20/donor) or one nickel ($100/donor) for The Last 2,000 miles (http://myappalachiantrial.com/the-last-2000-miles/) of the trek if Adams can reach the end of the trail, Mt. Katahdin, Maine. All of the proceeds will go to benefit Family Partnership Center.
Katrina Bellemare, FPC’s Executive Director said she’s in regular contact with Adams and his spirits are high despite a recent setback. Adams was waylaid for 11 days and had to return home with a dangerous case of cellulitis. She’s helping spread the word of Adams’ hike in hopes that people will get behind Adams’ push through the second half of the trail.
“Steve is back on the trail, keeping up a good pace and more determined than ever to meet his goal,” Bellemare said. “He’s such an inspiration to everyone at the Partnership, but also everyone who’s following his progress online.”
Bellemare said even a penny match from casual followers — $20 per person — will make a difference in the Partnership’s daily operations.
Adams, 63, set out on the six-month hike in early March. He last checked in with his followers on Monday, June 23 when he’d reached Waynesboro, Virginia. He gives periodic updates to the world on his blog, www.myappalachiantrial.com (that’s TRIAL, not trail;). Here’s an excerpt:
