Tampa, Fla. – The Patel Conservatory at the David A. Straz, Jr. Center for the Performing Arts will present students in grade nine through college in Hairspray in the TECO Theater on Friday-Sunday, June 27-29.
Leading up to the performances, students will spend three intensive weeks rehearsing and creating the show, directed by Sean Ryan Paris.
Hairspray is a family-friendly musical set in 1962 Baltimore and piled bouffant high with laughter, romance and delightfully tuneful songs. When the show premiered on Broadway, it won eight Tony Awards® including Best Musical.
Hairspray tells the story of lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad, who has only one desire — to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do!
Performances are Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2 and 7 p.m. Regularly priced tickets to Hairspray are $10 and $15 and may be purchased by calling 813.229.STAR (7827) or 800.955.1045 outside Tampa Bay, in person at the Straz Center Ticket Sales Office or online at www.strazcenter.org.
