BRADENTON, Fla. –Continuing its mission to advance and commercialize research into Alzheimer’s and other treatments, the Roskamp Institute located in the Bradenton area will lease space to Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals Inc., a publicly traded company formerly named Star Scientific Inc., according to Sharon Hillstrom, president and chief executive officer of the Bradenton Area Economic Development Corp. (EDC). Rock Creek plans to add 16 high-impact jobs over the next five years.
“The Roskamp Institute is a leader in the Bradenton area’s growing life sciences sector, blazing a trail of innovative research and therapies to help patients worldwide,”Hillstrom said. “With Roskamp’s CEO, Dr. Michael Mullan, also leading Rock Creek as chairman and chief executive officer, the affiliation between the two organizations is poised to bring leading-edge therapies to the life sciences market.”
The EDC assisted Rock Creek in applying for economic development incentives and rapid response permitting through Manatee County Government. To facilitate the relocation, Manatee County approved a $48,000 performance-based economic incentive grant for Rock Creek based on the creation of 16 jobs over five years. To qualify, the company’s jobs must provide an average wage that is twice the Manatee County annual average.
“Our plan is to consolidate operations at the institute’s Bradenton area location, and grow our staff for research and development, sales and marketing from a headquarters here,”Mullan said. Some of Rock Creek’s current employees will relocate to the Bradenton area over the next several months from locations in Massachusetts, Virginia and Washington, D.C., he said.
Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals (www.rockcreekpharma.com) is a technology oriented company principally focused on the discovery, development and commercialization of new drugs, formulations and compounds that provide therapies for inflammatory conditions, clinical immunology, neurological disease and behavioral health.
“The Manatee County Board of Commissioners is committed to maintaining a business-friendly climate to encourage businesses that offer high-impact jobs to locate and expand in the Bradenton area. Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals decision to locate at Roskamp Institute expands the scope of life sciences in our Bradenton area market. ” said Ed Hunzeker, Manatee County administrator.
Manatee County offers several incentives to businesses wishing to relocate or expand in the community. A list of Manatee County’s economic development incentives is available at www.mymanatee.org/econ_dev
