Sarasota, Florida – May 29, 2014 – For the first time in more than four decades, the international championship for one of the oldest and most elegant of Olympic sports will return to American soil from June 5th – 8th when Sarasota Bradenton hosts the 2014 Modern Pentathlon World Cup Finals.
This world-class sporting event kicks off with the Opening Ceremony on Thursday, June 5th at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art at 5:30 pm. Competition events will occur from June 6th – June 8th at the Sarasota Polo Club at Lakewood Ranch and the Selby Aquatic Center in Sarasota. General admission tickets to the polo club venue are available online at www.SBpentathlon.com. Gates open at 11:30 am. Tickets for the opening ceremony are available online as well.
The five disciplines of the Modern Pentathlon reflect the challenges a 19th century battlefield courier might have encountered: fighting off enemies (fencing and laser shooting), navigating a river (swimming), overcoming obstacles on an unfamiliar horse (show jumping), and traveling on foot (running). These five events capture the essence of the human experience to produce an unforgettable and thrilling display of skill and endurance.
The World Cup Final offers a family-friendly, festive atmosphere where spectators will witness the dedication and hard work of 72 aspiring Olympians who hail from Hungary, Lithuania, France, Russia and, of course, the United States. This World Cup Final constitutes the first in a series of major Modern Pentathlon events the community will host over the next three years; upcoming events are the 2015 Modern Pentathlon World Cup first round, the 2016 Modern Pentathlon World Cup Final and the 2016 U.S. Modern Pentathlon Olympic Team trials. Through the course of the competition series, the community will come to know these athletes as they make their trek on the “Road to Rio” – the host city for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
