Sarasota, FL (May 27th) – A group of local yoga teachers and activists have created “Practice with a Purpose,” a community-wide yoga event to be held Saturday, June 7th from 12PM to 5PM at Heartwood Retreat Center in Bradenton, FL. The event will benefit Selah Freedom – a local non-profit organization combating the issue of sex trafficking and exploitation in Southwest Florida.
Practice with a Purpose will feature a variety of donation-based yoga classes, live music, prizes, raw food fare and fresh juices, plus an array of the area’s favorite holistic and metaphysical vendors. All of the proceeds from the event will be donated to Selah Freedom, whose mission is to bring awareness to the issue of sex trafficking and to provide a safe place for survivors to heal. They help sexually exploited individuals find their voice and purpose and to reclaim all that was stolen from them through their victimization through a host of restorative services.
Human trafficking is a 35 billion dollar a year industry, second only to the drug trade and will soon replace it as the number one criminal industry. Florida is the 3rd worst state in the US for human trafficking and the Tampa Bay area is the 2nd worst for sex trafficking in the state, behind Miami. The average age of entry is 12-14 years old, and sadly most victims of this crime die within seven years of being subjected
to the abuse that is the sex trade. This is an issue that “hides in plain sight,” and needs immediate attention and community intention, which is where Practice with a Purpose comes in.
Through the practice of yoga, music, and meditation, Practice with a Purpose hopes to co-create a collective intention to free victims who are bound by slavery and sexual exploitation. The event is using the yoga term, “Warrior” as a theme by using yoga poses, Warrior One, Warrior Two and Warrior Three to represent different levels/types of participation and contribution, including everything from providing a survivor with yoga materials, spreading the word through community outreach, vendors selling merchandise and services, and yoga studios holding their own classes throughout the day to support the cause.
The day plans to cover three main areas as it relates to the issue of sex trafficking: Education & Awareness (by showing a documentary on the topic), Action & Movement (by the physical yoga practice with mindful intention on the cause), and Devotion & Hope (a final group meditation and dedication with music by the Sound Sisters to honor the affected victims, survivors, and families).
“In true yogi nature, we are going to lift this cause up with love and light, joining together in spirit, mind and body for one power-packed practice! Studios all over the community are coming together on this one day for a united fund-raising effort like none other,” said Allison Kummery, co-chair of the event.
