Sarasota, FL – The EyeOn App Version 2.0 User Study engaged 25 people ages 70+ from the Institute for the Ages’ growing 50+ Community Research Network (CRN), along with their adult children and/or caregivers. Participants in the study tested a mobile smartphone/tablet application which checks-in on older adults living alone, extending their independence in a simple, accessible way.
Using this app, family or other caregivers are notified by email or messaging if the user does not respond to scheduled check-ins, which are selected and preset by the user. A notification is sent at each scheduled time, and is repeated until the user responds by canceling the alert. After 30 minutes, if the alert was not canceled, caregivers are automatically contacted.
“I feel my son is thinking about me each morning at 9am when my app asks if I am ok. I know help is always close if I can’t respond for any reason. Very comforting.”

After using the app, CRN study participants answered questions on the experience such as gaining peace of mind, who might benefit most, what was best about the experience, and how best to learn about the app, along with technical questions on specific features.
Comments were both positive and constructive – more than three-quarters of users thought the app extremely useful, some gave minor suggestions for future versions, and a few commented in detail, suggesting further potential for the product. One study participant explained her son is less concerned about her living alone now that she’s using the app, and that their family talks now focus on other topics.
