Dale Kimball’s father, veteran Mark E. Kimball, was a ROTC graduate who after college was stationed at MacDill Air Force base during the Korean War. Dale began donating whole blood when he was in college at USF and has given over 30 gallons total, since becoming a platelet donor so he could help more patients. He encouraged his wife Mary to become a blood donor and for many years, when he went to donate platelets at the donor center, Dale would rotate bringing along one of his children. They would enjoy a snack while watching him donate and then he would give them his donor T-shirt gift to wear as a night shirt. This role modeling has led to three of his children, Stephen, Rosie and Becca, becoming blood donors after they turned 16 years old, with four more yet to become old enough.
Generally healthy people age 16 or older who weigh at least 110 pounds can donate blood. To learn more about the importance of blood donation and how donors can target the power of their blood type visit oneblood.org or call 1.800.68.BLOOD (1.800.682.5663)
All donors receive a wellness check-up of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and iron count, including a cholesterol screening, along with a special gift. Those who donate blood two (2) times between May 1 and August 31, 2014 will receive a free lunch offer courtesy of Outback Steakhouse® and be entered to win “Outback for a Year”. Plus, all donors in May and June will receive a coupon for $5.00 off two entrees from Outback Steakhouse®.
Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs a blood transfusion. Blood that is donated today will likely be transfused into a patient within two to three days. The turn-around is that fast, the need is constant.
