SARASOTA, Fla. (May 15, 2014) – USF Sarasota-Manatee received a $100,000 donation from the Betty Schoenbaum Donor Advised Fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County to create the Alex and Betty Schoenbaum Scholarship Fund in the College of Hospitality and Technology Leadership. Scholarships from this permanent fund will be available to all USFSM graduate level students for up to two semesters, based upon merit and financial need.
Betty Schoenbaum, a community philanthropist and supporter of many human service and educational causes, created the fund in memory of her husband, Alex, who died in 1996. He was an All-American football player at Ohio State University and a pioneer businessman in the hospitality industry, franchising a chain of motels and over 2,000 restaurants in 36 states. Alex is best remembered for developing the Shoney’s restaurant chain.
“With the growth that the University of South Florida has made since opening in Sarasota, I feel that the education received there positively impacts the entire area because we have educated students who will do well in their fields, and for whom there is great demand,” said Schoenbaum. “With the leadership and the enthusiasm of the College of Hospitality and Technology Leadership to make their college even better, I know that USF Sarasota-Manatee will be a large campus someday. I believe in giving when it will make a true impact on the university. My philosophy is: ‘The joy of giving is the joy of living!’”
Arthur M. Guilford, regional chancellor of USFSM, expressed the institution’s gratitude for Schoenbaum’s support of the College of Hospitality and Technology Leadership. “Betty is a great friend to USFSM and wants to help us become one of the top-ten hospitality colleges in the country by the year 2020,” Guilford said. “The income earned on her endowed scholarship will provide the kind of financial aid that students need when so many of them are juggling attending school, working and raising families while advancing their hospitality leadership careers. It will grow over time and provide a strong basis on which to build our high-quality graduate level student body—made up of valuable industry professionals that are highly sought after by the employers of today and tomorrow.”
