Tampa BayCycle is your resource for local bicycling news, events, safety tips & advocacy. The initiative encourages biking as an option for getting to work, school, for errands or recreational activities. The campaign is designed to bring people together who believe that riding a bicycle benefits both you and our entire community. This is the seventh year for Tampa BayCycle Bike Month events. Tampa BayCycle is made possible through a grant from the Florida Department of Transportation and managed by the New North Transportation Alliance and Tampa Downtown Partnership.
Month-long activities include free Bike Safety Courses, fun group rides, light giveaways, bike to work events, and more. A complete schedule of events can be found at www.tampabaycycle.com.
“Fifteen percent of trips are within one mile of home and could easily be taken by bicycle instead of car. With a helmet, proper safety skills and careful route choice, biking becomes a much more feasible and healthier way to get around.” said Karen Kress, director of transportation and planning, Tampa Downtown Partnership, and a bikes-on-bus commuter. “Through Tampa BayCycle, we offer a variety of opportunities for people to get on their bikes – from bike valet at the Tampa Downtown Market and local events, bike safety classes, to promoting the Bicycle Friendly Business designation.”
According to Julie Bond, Senior Research Associate at the Center for Urban Transportation Research and co-founder of Tampa Baycycle, “The Tampa Bay area is a great place to ride a bicycle. The more we connect our region with safe bicycle pathways and provide education to both bicyclists and drivers, the more people will discover the benefits of bicycling.”
Considering bike commuting? Tampa Bay Area Regional Transportation Authority (TBARTA) offers a “Bike Buddy” program to connect cyclists with similar routes. They back it up with an Emergency Ride Home for peace of mind on a car-free day. Test the ride out on May 16, National Bike to Work Day! HART and PSTA transit agencies offer many programs to support cycling. Riders can also join the National Bike Challenge and make Tampa Bay proud.
