SARASOTA (April 16, 2014) – USF Sarasota-Manatee’s Center for Partnerships for Arts Integrated Teaching (PAInT) will co-sponsor Bay Haven Elementary School ‘s “Magical Math Connections Day” on May 2 from 12:45–3:30 p.m.
in keeping with its continuing emphasis on providing future teachers and elementary students with innovative classroom experiences that blend the arts and learning.
The goal of the event is to enrich the math program at Bay Haven. Drs. Marie Byrd-Blake and Tricia Hunsader, USFSM College of Education (COE), and Chad Erickson, principal of Bay Haven Elementary School, believe that the integration of arts and creativity with mathematics inspires students and cultivates a desire for learning through hands-on, artistic and enriching activities. “Bay Haven students will have the wonderful opportunity to learn interesting strategies and games from USFSM’s undergraduate education students,” said Erickson. “This will help them understand grade level math concepts.”
Byrd-Blake, Hunsader and Erickson will facilitate several creative math centers for third, fourth and fifth grade students, assisted by approximately 20 College of Education students. The interaction between USFSM’s teacher candidates and the Bay Haven teachers will be valuable for all concerned. “This is an opportunity for College of Education students to learn creative ways to connect children with challenging math content,” said Hunsader. “The skills of focus were chosen by the Bay Haven teachers to ensure added value to the math curriculum.”
All materials for the centers will be donated by the Center for PAInT and USF Sarasota-Manatee’s SM2 Math Club.
