TAMPA, FL (April 8, 2014) NYSE, TSX: STN
Stantec is a strategic community partner with the Tampa Bay Lightning’s Foundation and recently partnered on the “What Makes a Hero” Essay Contest. The contest ended March 9th and local winners from the University of Florida and the Pasco County School system were announced at the April 1st Lightning vs. Montreal Canadiens hockey game.
Two students were selected to receive $5,000 scholarships to continue their education after submitting an essay defining what makes a community hero and his or her key attributes. The winners include Hannah Weinman, a sophomore at the University of Florida (UF) studying communications and Pasco County School’s Kevin Graydon, a senior studying engineering at Wiregrass Ranch High School.
Weinman believes that daily acts of kindness are the key. “One lesson I have taken from being a member of a service fraternity is: many hands make for light work. This idea makes me dream of a world in which everyone performs daily acts of heroism…these small gestures and the seemingly trivial acts of kindness accumulate and have an astounding impact in our world….every member of the community has the potential to be a hero.”
Pasco County student Graydon observed, “A hero is a silent aide to his or her own community. A true hero is someone who dedicates their life to helping others and pursues a worthy and noble cause expecting nothing in return.”
Stantec and the Tampa Bay Lightning Foundation congratulate these young leaders on their winning essays.
