TAMPA, FL.(April 2, 2014)- Frank Travieso of Team UnitedHealthCare/The 706 Project fought off challenges from Ruben Companioni (Jamis Hagens Berman p/b Sutter) and Thomas Brown (Astellas Cycling Team) to win the men’s race at the Sixth Annual Gasparilla Criterium + Cycling Festival presented by Cigar City Brewing Co. and Bright House Networks. Companioni and Brown placed second and third, respectively. In the women’s pro race, Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom presented by Pink Siren Sports) powered to victory past Christy Keely (Pepper Palace Pro Cycling) and Joanie Caron (Garneau Factory Team).
“Both the men’s and women’s pro races provided great excitement for fans and are a part of what makes this event so great,” Gasparilla Criterium + Cycling Festival race director David Green said. “We’d like to thank the Tampa Downtown Partnership, including Karen Kress, Shaun Drinkard, and Christine Burdick for starting such a wonderful event and helping it grow to what it has become today. We would also like thank the city of Tampa and the mayor’s office for its support of the Gasparilla Criterium along with all our amazing sponsors. While the weather affected some of the activities during the day, we appreciate the support of our community. And with their continued support, we look forward to making this Tampa event the best of its kind in the United States.”
The exciting day at the Gasparilla Criterium + Cycling Festival Presented by Cigar City Brewing Co. and Bright House Networks began with amateur races in the early afternoon. The amateur races featured a mix of veteran cyclists racing in the master’s races and up and coming performers in the juniors divisions. These races were followed by men’s and women’s races in categories 1-5.
During the amateur races, the Cycling, Multi-sport, Health and Wellness Expo presented by SeaSucker Bicycle Racks and Reeves Import Motorcars gave fans an opportunity to meet innovative vendors who were on hand demonstrating their newest products. Fans were also treated to coffee provided by Kahwa Coffee.
While the day was filled with two-wheeled racers, it also included competitors on two feet. The 3K Beer Dash presented by tbt* benefiting Girls on the Run took place on the criterium race course and gave participants the chance to wear their funniest and most irreverent costumes. While each competitor over the age of 21 received a Cigar City Brewing beverage for participating, our community received something much more important. The race benefitted Girls on the Run, a non-profit organization that teaches self-esteem to girls through a curriculum that includes training for a 5K race.
Families got a chance to get into the action at the Kids Criterium & Family Fun Ride presented by Glazer Children’s Museum. The message of healthy and fit families was conveyed as bicycles, big wheels and tricycles roamed the criterium course.
Prior to the pro races, the Corporate Team Charity Relay presented by the Tampa Bay Business Journal benefiting onbikes (http://onbikes.org/) took place on the criterium course. Teams from Tampa Bay’s most well known companies, including Sykes, TECO and Cigar City Brewing competed in a relay style race to determine who rules cycling in Tampa Bay’s corporate community. The Corporate Team Relay benefitted onbikes, a non-profit that brings the experience and freedom of cycling to underprivileged youth.
