Annual Caring for the Caregiver Conference will be held April 26
TAMPA, Fla. (April 3, 2014) — Moffitt Cancer Center will host a Caring for the Caregiver program on April 26. The free program will provide educational sessions and peer support for caregivers of cancer patients.
A cancer diagnosis often affects the whole family causing many changes in priorities, relationships and plans. This program helps caregivers navigate the waters of supporting a loved one through treatment, as well as learning ways to manage their own stress while caring for the patient.
Caregiver Kristen DeRoo-Lombardi and her husband, Paul, know about the strain a cancer diagnosis can have on a family because they have experienced it. When Kristen met Paul, he already had a chronic form of leukemia. A year and a half later, his cancer progressed and brought on new challenges.
“You are not able to plan from one day to the next. You have to live in the present. The logistics can be very difficult on your bank account, your family and your friends,” explained Kristen DeRoo-Lombardi.
Moffitt has help available for patients and their caregivers, including access to social work, the Arts In Medicine Program, support groups and yoga classes. Kristen DeRoo-Lombardi took advantage of several of Moffitt’s programs and says they helped keep her positive. “Taking Paul to Moffitt helped me realize we are not alone. If you reach out, there is help available. I tell other caregivers not to dwell on negative thoughts. Some days are going to be bad, but you need to take care of yourself in order to be a good caregiver.”
Caring for the Caregiver is open to everyone caring for a cancer patient and will include discussions on how cancer affects the family, how to manage stress, and learning ways to take care of yourself.
Moffitt will host the event from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. April 26 in the Vincent A. Stabile Research Building, 12902 Magnolia Drive. Free valet parking is available at Gold Valet. A light breakfast and catered lunch will be provided. To register, call 813-745-8407 or visit http://tinyurl.com/CFCG2014.
