USAmeriBank sign, created by Thomas Sign & Awning, gets award from Signs of the Times magazine
TAMPA, Fla. – Lady Columbia, the iconic sign watching over historic Ybor City from the USAmeriBank branch on Seventh Avenue, has been voted the Readers’ Choice award by readers of the Signs of the Times magazine, selected from signs across the country.
Among the various categories voted upon online, Lady Columbia was nominated for Readers’ Choice in the electric sign category and was selected as the winner by a large margin, with 36.6 percent of the vote.
The 11-foot-tall sign honors the rich history of Ybor and fits with other historical signs in the area by incorporating retro neon lights. The inspiration behind the sign was the original Lady Columbia sign, installed on the building more than 60 years ago when it housed Columbia Bank.
The sign was designed, constructed, manufactured and installed by Thomas Sign & Awning Company, a Clearwater-based manufacturer of corporate signage. StudioMax Design, a Tampa-based branding, design and advertising company assisted with the design.
“Seeing our sign acknowledged on a national basis reflects the skill and workmanship of our designers and fabricators,” said Sam Feldstein, COO of Thomas Sign.
For the Readers’ Choice award, a selection committee chose six electric signs from around the country to be voted on. Voters then narrowed those down to four, followed by a final round of voting for the winner.
“It’s rewarding to see what started out as a vision, an old photograph and a newspaper clipping turn into something valued and cherished by so many people,” said Joseph V. Chillura, CEO of USAmeriBank. “We went to great lengths to create a sign that honors the original sign and represents the culture of the Ybor community.”
