Sarasota, Florida, March 7, 2014 – Fawley Bryant’s team formed for the 2014 AIA Florida Gulf Coast CANstruction® competition wins the “Best Use of Labels” award for their “Leaning Tower of Pizza” structure. CANstruction® is a unique nonprofit organization which hosts competitions, exhibitions and events showcasing colossal structures made entirely out of full cans of food. After the structures are built, the creations go on display to the public as a giant art exhibition. At the end of the event, all food is donated to local hunger relief organizations.
Fawley Bryant’s CANstruction® team leader, Jenna Kiser, along with Kirk Bauer, Chris Bretthauer, Stuart Henderson, and Kathryn Witting built the structure using 1,826 cans of nutritious food. Mr. Bauer explained, “The name and concept of Fawley Bryant’s structure are a hybrid of food & architecture, two things that are very important to the team. We chose one of the most iconic and recognizable structures in the world, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and merged it with our favorite meal, Pizza.” The proportions of the can structure and its famous lean was derived from the real life tower and manifested through different can heights and diameters. The base of the tower is made from the most important beginning elements of a pizza, the sauce and meat. The body of the tower has been created out of standard pizza toppings such as mushrooms and olives. The bell tower is represented by smaller cans and a sweeter topping, thus adding a crown to the tower. Fawley Bryant’s team designed and built a proportionally correct nutritious “Leaning Tower of Pizza”.
