Presentation from cybersecurity author, panel discussion set for March 3
TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 27, 2014) — Target, Yahoo, Neiman Marcus. Who will be next? After recent security breaches at those major corporations, USF and the Sun Trust Foundation on Monday, March 3 will host a national expert on cybersecurity along with top executives from Florida Blue, Tampa Electric and Outback, for a discussion on how to protect consumers. Leaders in energy, healthcare, banking and retail sectors will share ideas on what they’re doing to keep customers’ personal information safe.
It’s all part of USF’s ongoing commitment to cybersecurity education and community research, and it marks the inaugural USF SunTrust Foundation Lecture Series on Global Economics. The lecture series is made possible by a $1 million gift from the SunTrust Foundation. Headlining the event is the co-author of a new, acclaimed book on cybersecurity threats and solutions, P.W. Singer.
The event begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel.
Singer, senior fellow and director of the Center for 21st Century Security and Intelligence at the Brookings Institution, will deliver a keynote address. He’s received widespread praise for his book, “Cybersecurity and Cyberwar: What Everyone Needs to Know” (Oxford University Press, 2014). It’s been called “an essential read” by Google’s executive chairman and “the most approachable and readable book ever written on the cyber world,” by the former Supreme Allied Commander of NATO.
The audience will consist of Florida higher education stakeholders, statewide business leaders and members of the USF community. The panel discussion participants include David Pizzo, Florida Blue’s market president for West Florida; David Rowan, senior vice president and director of enterprise technology risk management for SunTrust Banks; Gordon Gillette, president of Tampa Electric & People’s Gas; and Mandy Shaw, Senior VP for Technology and Chief Accounting Officer at Bloomin’ Brands, the company that owns Outback, Carrabas and Bonefish.
