|DOGS ON THE MOVE TAKES ITS SHOW ON THE ROAD TO MANATEE COUNTY TO TRANSPORT HOMELESS ANIMALS FROM SOUTH FLORIDA TO NO-KILL PARTNERS ACROSS THE USA.
(PALMETTO, FL, February 22, 2014)- The highly successful non-profit pet transport program, DOGS ON THE MOVE by Pawsitive4Life, has expanded from their base in Miami to now help the homeless dogs of Manatee County in a move inspired by citizens of Manatee that requested DOGS ON THE MOVE to help their counties homeless dogs. All of the Manatee dogs going on this transport are bigger breeds and many are bully breed mixes, which are the types most at risk in municipal shelters in Florida.
DOGS ON THE MOVE works together with these local shelters and is considered an innovative and cutting-edge program which addresses the crisis of homeless pets in South Florida. After meeting with Manatee County Animal Services administration, including the Director, Kris Weisfopf, it was agreed that a viable collaboration was possible to help bring the shelter into range of achieving a “no kill” status of over 90% pets saved at this county shelter.
Manatee County was the first county in Florida to declare its intentions to become a no kill shelter back in 2011. Working to this end, the county now has an 87% save rate, which is incredibly close to the over 90% needed to be called a no kill shelter. This new collaboration will ensure that more adoptable dogs are making it out the doors, getting on the DOGS ON THE MOVE vans, and on the road North to safety and wonderful new families.
Recently, Manatee County Animal Control responded to several animal emergencies in their jurisdiction, including a large confiscation of neglected pets as well as a hoarding case, in addition to the normal intake of pets from the community. Open admission shelters can be inundated at any time with needy pets, and partnerships with groups like DOGS ON THE MOVE is essential to give as many adoptable pets as possible a chance at a new life.
