Wheels of Success’ appearance on Queen Latifah shares how the charity positively impacts the lives of working families striving to achieve more with reliable transportation solutions
TAMPA, FL (February 19, 2014) – Recently completing its 10th year of service in the Tampa community, Queen Latifah’s national talk show will highlight the expanding mission of Wheels of Success, helping working families stay employed and achieve greater success with affordable and reliable transportation. The show will be recorded on February 19, and will air locally later in February on channel CW44 WTOG-TV at 5:00 p.m.
Production for the Queen Latifah show was in Tampa with Wheels of Success last year to interview three families, one who received a car that very day. These families are representative of more than 1,100 recipients that receive life-changing vehicles and repair services from the local charity. Community support, including a dedicated group of donors, corporate partners, employers and social service agencies, have made it possible for Wheels of Success to continue to help at least 100 families every year since its start in 2003.
Far from a free ride, Wheels of Success’ program participants must meet a number of requirements to qualify for assistance. Applicants must be employed full-time and meet all of the license and insurance requirements of the State of Florida. In addition, recipients must attend a car care class to prepare for the responsibilities of vehicle ownership, and volunteer their time at Wheels of Success to help keep costs down. Everyone in the program also makes a small monthly payment, based on their income and ability to pay, for one year before they receive their car title. CEO Susan Jacobs says “the monthly payments further cement their ownership of the vehicle, establishing responsible behaviors, and these program service fees enable Wheels of Success to assist even more families waiting for wheels.”
Community support has been the secret to Wheels of Success’ tremendous progress in the Tampa Bay area. Local partnerships with the automotive industry, prominent employers and social service agencies have been critical in accomplishing its mission to get working families back on the road. When Wheels of Success faced the closure of its long-time headquarters at the Family Justice Center last year, it was the amazing response of this network that quickly connected the nonprofit with a new office. Long-time partner MacDonald Training Center (MTC) generously opened its doors, providing Wheels of Success with a larger space and greater infrastructure to accommodate its continuing growth, and plans for the future.
Wheels of Success has provided 568 vehicles and an additional 538 auto-related services to Tampa Bay area families since 2003. Visit www.wheelsofsuccess.org or call 813-417-1090 to learn more or to make a donation.
