SARASOTA, Fla. (Feb. 13, 2014) –On Jan. 22, 2014, Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation, Inc.’s board of trustees approved grants totaling $3,373,959, bringing the total of grants made in the first quarter of the fiscal year to more than $3.6 million. Since 1976, the Foundation has made grants totaling $54 million and has raised $76 million. The Healthcare Foundation’s ENVISION philosophy is designed to seek support for the community’s current and future healthcare needs.
These grants to Sarasota Memorial Health Care System included:
▼ $2,232,840 for renovations and upgrades for the seven pods with a total of 62 beds in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Replacement of the power columns will allow for easier patient access by caregivers and the ability to move the beds within the pods.
▼ $445,117 for an ultrasound endoscope used primarily by gastroenterologists and pulmonologists in the endoscopy suite, providing better resolution for inspection of the gastrointestinal tract and the identification of possible cancerous lesions.
▼ $350,000 for five zero-gravity radiation protection shields for the catheterization labs and operating room. They will allow users the freedom to move around the procedure table with unrestricted range of motion.
▼ $199,302 for a Zeiss Pentero microscope for the operating room, providing the surgeon with superior optics, illumination and magnification for surgeries on such delicate structures as the brain and spinal cord.
▼ $75,000 for a full-time clinical research nurse to assist independent research projects undertaken by Sarasota Memorial physicians for one year. The grant also includes a year of biostatistical analysis and data mining.
▼ $71,700 for a bronchial thermoplasty system for the treatment of severe asthma in adult patients. Results have been long lasting with nearly 80% of patients reporting significant improvement in their quality of life after three weeks of treatments.
