TAMPA, FLA. (Feb. 12, 2014) – Suncoast Credit Union Foundation announces a $15,000 grant to update a 250 sq. ft. family resource room and technology at Children’s Cancer Center. The newly remodeled resource room embraces a modern appeal fit with hardwood floors, contemporary bookshelves and comfortable wingback chairs for parents and children. Four state-of-the-art HP Touchsmart desktops with touch screens replaced the dated technology, making it easier for families to access medical information, treatment facilities, online support resources and financial literacy tools.
Research shows the more pleasant and tranquil the environment, the more positive the impact on physical and emotional health for cancer patients. This upgrade features functional, comfortable and easy-to-clean chairs in the resource room and will allow patients suffering from muscle or bone pain a place to relax and focus after counseling sessions.
“We believe that it is incredibly important for families to have immediate access to technology and a calm space to spend time with each other while in the care of Children’s Cancer Center,” says Mary Tlachac, Executive Director of the Suncoast Credit Union Foundation.
Patty O’Leary, C.O.O. of the Children’s Cancer Center says, “We are so grateful that Suncoast Credit Union Foundation shares in the vision of our mission to offer educational support to children and their families battling childhood cancer or chronic blood disorders. With benefits that will extend well beyond mere aesthetics, the new Family Resource Room will support the families we serve for years to come.”
Suncoast Credit Union Foundation is sponsored entirely by Suncoast Credit Union, allowing 100 percent of funds contributed to go directly to the organizations and initiatives that assist children in the communities the credit union serves. In 2013, Suncoast Credit Union Foundation provided $1.7 million in funding and grants for a total of $9 million since its inception in 1992.

About the Children’s Cancer Center
The Children’s Cancer Center was founded in 1974. The organization thrives on the philosophy that a child’s diagnosis becomes the entire family’s diagnosis. Therefore, all programs are designed to address the need of the entire family and fall under one of three main areas of support – emotional, educational or financial. Here, kids and families can learn to cope together, as a unit.
