Klaus draws on her experience with Thoroughbreds in the suspense thriller, which is set in Sarasota with intriguing twists played out in the backdrop of horse racing. The book’s handsome young protagonist Christian Roberts enjoys an easy-going lifestyle, renting out small sailboats on Sarasota Bay, until he receives a Thoroughbred colt from his estranged, dying father and pledges to race the horse, a clone of the legendary Secretariat. Susan Klaus, a native of Sarasota, Fla., has had a lifetime career working with animals. For the last 13 years, she has bred and raced Thoroughbreds.
