Oldsmar, FL, February 2, 2014 – On Saturday, February 1, teams of resident canvassed Gull Aire Village, a 55+ community in Oldsmar, from 10:00 am until noon using 16 golf carts, to collect food donations for Oldsmar Cares. It is part of a 6-week food drive put together by Debbie Brown and Judy Dentici, residents of Gull Aire who also volunteer their time at the Oldsmar Cares food pantry. “We noticed that after the holidays the food pantry stock was dwindling, so we decided to have a food drive here in Gull Aire,” said Debbie Brown, food drive co-coordinator. She announced the food drive in the community newsletter, informing residents to make a contribution at the Club House January 7 to February 17.
Anne Marie LeBlanc, another Gull Aire resident who volunteers for Oldsmar Cares, brought the food drive to the attention of the Gull Aire Village Social Club. Members of the Social Club took notice and the idea took off. Les and Ginny Johnson suggested adding the community-wide, door-to-door food collection. Ginny organized the event by divided the neighborhood into 16 sections with teams of three assigned to collecting food from specific homes. Les thought the best way to guarantee that the food drive reached the whole community was through this special effort, and the Johnsons helped secure all the golf carts and volunteers for the event. “Thanks to our great friends and residents we got together 52 workers and we had a very successful morning,” said Ginny Johnson, food drive co-coordinator. “Our answer to Oldsmar Cares is Yes, Gull Aire Village Cares.”
Wearing the signature yellow Oldsmar Cares t-shirts, volunteers collected food from over 600 homes in the community and brought it to the Club House in a grand parade of golf carts. In addition to helping collect food, the Gull Aire Village Social Club donated $100 to buy food to add to the results of the food drive.
“To say this food drive was a team effort is an understatement,” said Brenda Gaulin, Oldsmar Cares Chairperson. “The residents of Gull Aire Village are extremely generous and we can’t thank them enough for their support.”
