Pinellas County/PCED Awarded $200,000 Grant to Improve Clearwater Coast Guard Air Station Pedestrian Access
The grant was awarded through Florida’s Defense Infrastructure Grant program, which supports local infrastructure projects deemed to have a positive impact on the military value of installations within the state, and that also benefit the local community. Upon completion, the Rescue Way Pedestrian Walkway will allow personnel to safely travel from offices and training facilities at Lewis Hall to the Coast Guard Air Station without impeding vehicle traffic on Rescue Way.
Mike Meidel, Director of Pinellas County Economic Development, explains the importance of the project, saying, “We are honored to be able, with our partners, to enhance the campus of the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater at the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE) through this Defense Infrastructure Grant. Clearwater is the largest and busiest Air Station in the Coast Guard, and with this grant we will address safety concerns and improve pedestrian access. The USCG Air Station Clearwater, the U.S. Army Reserve and the Florida National Guard employ over 700 personnel at PIE, and generate nearly $60 million annually in direct and indirect earnings in Pinellas County.”
